How to get WiFi after resume on Ubuntu 9.04

May 30, 2009

One of the major bugs plaguing Ubuntu 9.04 is the bug where after a resume, your WiFi does not work. Here I will explain how to get it working. If you have a laptop, you might be in luck, check the sides of your computer for a little switch with an antenna icon on it. Whichever way it is, push it the other way (off) for 10-20 seconds and then push it back to on. Wait about 10 seconds and Ubuntu 9.04 should recognize the WiFi device and you should have your Internet back. For the next scenario, a WiFi connected desktop, it can be very simple or very complex. If you are lucky enough to have an external WiFi antenna, just unplug it, wait 10-20 seconds, plug it back in and you have WiFi. For other scenarios, try restarting the network manager, if that doesn’t work just reboot.

Tremulous

Halo, Battlefield, Call of Duty, they are all the same, shoot or be shot, no complications just aim and shoot. Tremulous changes this aspect of a FPS game by allowing structures to be built, I will get to that later on in the post. There are two teams, the Humans and the Aliens. The humans are technology and upgrade based where you go to an armory to buy new weapons or armor. The humans have a wide range of weaponry available to them, from physical weapons like a rifle and shotgun to advanced energy weapons like a pulse rifle and Lucifier cannon. Aliens are class based, where they evolve (they cannot de-evolve) to more advanced classes. The aliens have many classes from the dretch and the basilisk to the dragoon and tyrant. The way building works is that the building player must be wielding a construction kit (humans) or be a Granger (aliens). All structures except for spawns rely on the central structure and the number of build points availible. The central structure is a reactor (provides build points in the form of energy) for the humans and an overmind (provides “sentience”) for the aliens. Spawns (eggs for aliens, telenodes for humans) require 10 build points to  construct. In tremulous both teams have means of reaching very high places. For the humans its a Jet Pack (requires reactor to be alive) and for the aliens its wallwalking (only dretches, basilisks, and adv. grangers can wallwalk) where they can walk on walls. I give this game a 9.75/10 the remaining .25 could be made up by being able to run a dedicated server and play at the same time on it and then nerfing adv. grangers as if you attempt to attack with them all they do is waddle and block tyrants and dragoons. Did I mention that grangers are fat, slow, waddling grey blobs that spit and have a weak melee attack? It is a great game overall. It actually started as a Quake mod, but when the Quake source code was released Tremulous became a stand-alone game.

Kubuntu

February 27, 2009

Like many other people I have experienced problems with Windows Vista. I got Vista with my new Dell XPS M1330 last December and it has worked until it just started crashing randomly. After spending about 5 hours chatting with someone from Microsoft, another 3 hours on the phone with Dell and finally getting a guy from Geek Squad out to my house it kept happening. I started to look for alternatives on which I could run Windows programs without the downsides of Vista. I had been using Ubuntu Server for about a year as a file server, and so I looked into that and realized that I liked KDE better then Gnome for the desktop environment. I first partitioned 250GB of hard drive space for Kubuntu (out of 500) but then I realized that it was not worth keeping Vista on my computer. So I gave the full 500GB (minus partitioning) to Kubuntu. I could run any Windows program via WINE, and it had a built in office suite. The first few things I installed were Adobe CS3, 3DS Max and Tremulous. Adobe CS3 is a graphic/flash/web design package, 3DS Max is 3d modelling software and Tremulous is a free, open source fps game. Download here. If you want free versions of the software, GIMP is a good Photoshop equivalent, along with illustrator, Flash there is no equivalent to though. A good equivilent for 3ds Max is Blender 3d. Download here. For a browser I found Firefox. Firefox is open source and free and fully compatible with about 99% of websites.  Click here for your Vista refund. The least helpful source I found was Microsoft Help and Support, all they had me do was edit the registry and that didn’t help, I think it made it worse…
